02 · how it works

Three steps. The middle one is the fun one.

No menus, no map UI, no notifications. Just a phrase that returns the goods.

STEP 01

Install the skill

One line in your terminal. The skill weighs less than a small JPG and ships with zero runtime dependencies.

STEP 02

Ask the phrase

Type What's free today? in any agent session. The skill reads your area from your system locale — no precise GPS.

STEP 03

Auto-redeem, or grab the code

Pick a deal and choose: let the skill redeem it for you (it drives the merchant's site), or just get a voucher code — verified once by phone — to redeem in the app yourself.

03 · quickstart

One phrase. Real output.

Sample response from a session in Lower Manhattan during June 9–12, 2026 — when both partners run side by side. Results vary by area and partner availability.

04 · trust & privacy

Boringly honest about a few important things.

No dark patterns, no "free trial," no email walls. If we ever change that, we'll lose our right to call this thing freetoday.

Area, not coordinates.

freetoday reads your neighborhood or city from your existing system locale. We don't ask for GPS, and we never store precise location data — there's nowhere on disk for it to live.

Verified, not scraped.

Every offering is human-checked against a partner email or signed confirmation. If a deal turns out to require a signup, a tip, or a "share to claim," it's not on freetoday. Full stop.

No newsletter, no upsell.

freetoday has no logged-in surface. There's no account to create, no email to capture, no premium tier waiting on the other side of "install now." It's a skill that returns a list.

Open source. Read the code.

AGPL-3.0-licensed, ~600 lines. The whole thing fits on your screen. If you want to see how a result becomes a result, the file is right there.

Live this week.

A short list to start. We'd rather verify five places carefully than list fifty we don't know.

The honest questions.

If yours isn't here, the GitHub issues tab is the right place.

How does freetoday know what's actually free?+
Each listing comes from a partner email or signed confirmation from the business itself. If something requires a signup, a tip, a follow, or a "share to unlock," it doesn't get added. There's a public source log for every active offering.
Does it use my exact location?+
No. freetoday reads your city or neighborhood from your existing system locale and uses that as a coarse anchor. There's no GPS request, no IP geolocation lookup, and no coordinates stored anywhere — including on our side.
Are the Cotti Coffee & TEAPULSE promos real partnerships?+
Yes — both are co-launch partners for NY Tech Week 2026. Cotti Coffee runs Jun 9–12 (20 codes/day, redeem at Cotti Coffee – Penn Station, 345 7th Ave); TEAPULSE 悸动 runs Jun 9–12 (20 codes/day per store, redeem at Bryant Park or Central Park). The skill verifies your phone once, then hands you a voucher code to redeem in-store — one free signature drink per merchant per day, no purchase required, first-come-first-served while supplies last. All four days, both partners run side by side.
What if I'm not in NYC?+
During launch week, NYC has the densest coverage by far. Other US metros (SF, LA, Chicago, Austin, Seattle) have a handful of verified offerings. If your area returns nothing, the skill says so plainly — it won't pad results with stale tips.
Will there be a paid tier?+
There are no plans for one. freetoday is a single skill that returns a list. If we ever need to fund it, we'll do it through transparent partner sponsorships — same as the Cotti launch — not through gated features or upgrades.
Can I submit a place?+
Yes. Open a PR on the partners file, or email [email protected]. We verify directly with the business before anything ships.
